Safely Celebrating Fourth of July, 2020

Fourth of July is an American tradition deeply ingrained in our culture. It weaves together our fundamental values, those focused on family, friends, our patriotism and our freedom. Simultaneously, it acts as a reminder for the brave actions taken by our founding fathers, without which this annual holiday would not exist. With that said, in order to keep those we care about most, our loved ones and our country’s future, safe, we have a responsibility to practice social distancing, heightened hygiene awareness, and prevent the spread of COVID-19. This does not mean we cannot celebrate! It just means celebrating responsibly. Here are some tips on how to stop the spread.

Addressing the recent spike in coronavirus cases, Robert Redfield, director of the CDC, said, “For the Fourth of July, which is a family event, we want to emphasize that it’s really important that we get back to being vigilant as our collective commitment ... to protect vulnerable friends, family, community.”

  • Maintain social distancing of 6 ft apart when in a public setting.

  • Wear a cloth face cover/mask per CDC recommendation when among others.

  • Limit large gatherings to include home celebrations and parties — Attend virtually or host outdoors with a well-ventilated, frequently sanitized space.

  • Celebrate the holiday with live-in residents to limit risk of exposure if possible.

  • Carefully handle food, plates, cups, and eating utensils. One designated person should handle food preparation and serving to limit potential infection.
